Ahead of the 124th anniversary（周年纪念日）of Mao’s birthday on December 26, people from all over China have travelled to Shaoshan, birthplace of Mao Zedong , in Central China’s Hunan Province, triggering（引发）a discussion about Mao’s legacy（遗产）.

Born on December 26, 1893, Mao led the Communist Party of China in the revolution and eventually established the People’s Republic of China. Mao is regarded as one of the most important figures in modern Chinese history.

More activities were held across China to celebrate the anniversary of Mao’s birth. Some college students also attended the performance. Shang Minghai, a student from Jilin University of Arts, said that students should commemorate Mao to keep up the revolutionary spirit of the older generation.

Most Chinese people complain about young people’s enthusiasm （热情）for celebrating Western festivals like Halloween and Christmas, which falls one day before Mao’s birthday.

Many people, especially seniors in China, thank Mao for his contribution in founding New China and they attribute China’s current （当前的）achievements to Mao’s efforts in strengthening industrialization and military power.  

Some other people share a concern about the income gap between the rich and the poor. Mao’s thoughts emphasized（强调）social equality, which could offer insight （领悟）into current social problems.
